Georgios Tsionis
Gastroenterologist–Hepatologist
He was born and raised in Serres. He is a graduate of the Medical School of Democritus University of Thrace. After graduating and completing his military service, he began his specialization in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the GRN Schwetzingen Clinic, an academic hospital affiliated with Heidelberg University in Germany.
During the general part of his residency, he gained in-depth experience across the full spectrum of gastroenterological, cardiological, and pulmonary diseases, and completed the required training in the Intensive Care Unit.
As part of his training in the specialized Gastroenterology department, he received extensive training in all modern elective and emergency diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. During his residency, ultrasonography constituted a central and defining pillar of his clinical and scientific training. The dynamic, non-invasive nature of the method, combined with the ability for immediate clinical correlation and repeatability, strongly captured his scientific interest.
Specifically, he acquired systematic, high-level training in upper and lower abdominal ultrasonography, as well as in intestinal ultrasound, in which he has significant clinical experience in both the diagnosis and follow-up of gastrointestinal tract disorders. In addition, he has extensive experience in the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) for the detailed characterization of focal and diffuse liver lesions.
In 2019, he obtained certification from the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin) as a Level I examiner, following recognition of his training and documented experience in abdominal ultrasonography. After obtaining his specialist title in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, he was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the tertiary care hospital Klinikum Darmstadt, an academic hospital affiliated with the Universities of Frankfurt and Heidelberg, in the state of Hesse, Germany.
After many years of training and professional experience abroad, in 2022 he decided to return to his hometown of Serres, where he founded Gastroenterological Diagnosis of Serres together with his father and brother, with the aim of providing high-quality medical services to the local community. His scientific activity includes participation as a speaker at national conferences, primarily focusing on upper abdominal ultrasound and intestinal ultrasonography, actively contributing to continuing medical education in the field of gastrointestinal ultrasound.
In recent years, he has been a regular contributor to the Greek medical journal “Endoscopies”, while from January 2026 and for three consecutive years he will serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Professional Association of Gastroenterologists of Greece (EPEGE).
