Internist – Gastroenterologist
Dr Wolfgang Blank is an internationally recognized expert in medical ultrasonography and a prominent member of the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM) and the German Society of Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS).
Following his medical studies and doctoral training at the University of Tübingen, Germany, he completed his specialist training in Surgery and Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology between 1980 and 1988. He subsequently served as Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Reutlingen Hospital, a position he held until 2015. He currently remains actively involved in clinical research and medical education at Reutlingen Hospital.
Dr Blank has played a major role in the development and teaching of clinical and thoracic ultrasonography in Germany. He served for many years as Head of the DEGUM Thoracic Ultrasound Working Group and holds the highest DEGUM Level III teaching qualification in Internal Medicine, Emergency Ultrasound, and Transthoracic Ultrasound. In recognition of his longstanding contribution to ultrasound education and his organization of numerous specialist ultrasound courses, he was awarded the DEGUM Medal of Honour in 2014.
His academic work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications in international and specialist journals, including the World Journal of Gastroenterology and Ultraschall in der Medizin. He has also served as an editor and author of several leading textbooks and book chapters addressing the clinical applications of ultrasonography, including Clinical Sonography (Thieme), Ultrasound Textbook and Atlas (Landsberg), Interventional Ultrasound (Thieme), and Chest Sonography (Springer).
Beyond Germany, Dr Blank is actively involved in international medical education and humanitarian medicine, including his work with the German Rotary Volunteer Doctors (GRVD) and as an ultrasound instructor at Dhulikhel Hospital in Nepal.
With decades of clinical, academic, and teaching experience, he brings a unique combination of advanced ultrasonographic expertise, extensive teaching experience, and an internationally oriented approach to clinical ultrasound education.
